My computer's been down for a week so I was on suicide watch. Ha Ha. Only kidding, but I realized how much i depended on the mother**** Two days ago, May 26, was the anniversary of the birth of Miles Davis. He was born on May 26, 1926 and passed on September 28, 1991. (But there is no death---death is the biggest lie.)
Miles Ahead LP (1957) is one of my 5 all time favorite jazz albums. The 19 piece band is arranged by Gil Evans who went on to work with Miles on Porgy And Bess and Sketches of Spain, to name the most famous ones. I can't express how much I love Evan's contribution to the album. The sound he obtains is just sublime, from the screaming brass to the most delicate little flute and clarinet. And of course, Miles on flugelhorn, not his usual trumpet, is just superb.
I wanted very much to post this album but I had a dilemma. Miles Ahead was originally recorded in MONO ONLY and later re-channeled for stereo. All the ten mono tracks are available on youtube but in ten different uploads, not all together. If you want to hear the original mono versions, that is the way to go. This is the only post to upload the whole album in one shot, but you're hearing the stereo version, not how the album was first recorded.
That said, this upload has excellent sound and includes four alternate takes. If you just want to listen to the original album, the last track, I Don't Wanna Be kissed (By Anyone But You) ends at 37:00. That's how I would recommend you hear it.
In honor of Miles I'm also going to post a video of part of the actual recording session of Miles Ahead.

This is a historically important entry. No one has yet been able to beat these 3 vinyl records – MILES AHEAD, PORGI and BESS, SCETCHES of SPAIN. Gil Evans and Miles TURNED the outdated Mind of the time.

Ludwig van Beethoven

No one has been able to match MIles in his entire career PERIOD.

This record came out when I was in hs. I loved Miles but I only liked small bands so I didn’t expect to like this. I was pleasantly surprised and still feel the same way. So nice to be able to stream it- especially nice with no scratches.👍

Well, it took me a while before understanding the greatness of Miles Davis. His music style is exceptional.
