After acting school he was discovered by Jean Cocteau and appeared in a wartime production of Les parents terribles ("The Terrible Parents"). His first feature film came in 1946 with his role in Les portes de la nuit ("The Doors of the Night"). He later went on to perform in 80 films including The Pianist (1998).
In 1965 he began a second career as a singer, with the help of Simone Signoret and her husband Yves Montand. Reggiani became one of the most acclaimed performers of French "Chanson" ("song") and although he was in his 40s, his bad-boy image made him popular with both young and older listeners. His best known songs include "Les loups sont entres dans Paris" ("The Wolves Have Entered Paris") and "La femme qui est dans mon lit." ("The Woman Who Is In My Bed").
In later life he became a painter and gave a number of exhibitions of his artwork.
Serge Reggiani died of a heart attack at the age of 82, one day after the death of another well known French singer Sacha Distel. He is interred in the Cimetière du Montparnasse.
La vieille

Que tu reverras tes garçons
Qui sont partis de ta maison
Sixième étage, vue sur la cour
Pour les sourires et pour l'amour
Il fallait repasser la veille
Tant et tant d'années ont passé
Nous avons oublié la vieille
Et comme les autres entre deux âges
J'ai perdu mon livre d'images
Alors... commença le passé
Je ne sais pas pourquoi
Ce soir
Je me demande
Je me demande
Dans quel jardin tu dors
La vieille au bout de ton voyage
Dans quel jardin tu dors
Sous quel paysage
Ma vieille ma pauvre douce...
On ne sait pas pourquoi
Un soir
Dans une chambre
On n'a plus l'habitude
Alors soudain le cœur s'étonne
De cette solitude
Qui vient comme l'automne
Ma vieille ma mère ma douce...
The song "La Vieille" by Serge Reggiani is a poignant reflection on the passage of time and its impact on the relationships we hold dear. The first verse describes the distance that has grown between the singer and his mother, whom he refers to as "la vieille" or "the old woman", and how he has forgotten about her with the passage of time. He paints a vivid picture of her life in a small apartment on the sixth floor overlooking a courtyard, where she used to wait for her sons to visit her. But as the years have gone by, he and his brothers have moved on with their lives and forgotten about their mother. The passage of time is highlighted further with the line "tant et tant d'années ont passé", meaning "so many years have passed".
The second verse takes a more introspective turn as the singer reflects on his own life. He mentions that his brothers, Julien and Pierre, have been successful in their endeavours, but he has lost touch with them. He talks about his own experiences with women, luck, and war, and how they have shaped his life. He also mentions that he is getting old and starting to feel the weight of his past choices. The chorus is a lament for the mother figure, wondering where she is now and what kind of life she is leading in her old age.
Overall, "La Vieille" is a moving tribute to the passage of time and the way it shapes our relationships and our lives. It highlights the importance of not forgetting the people who have been a part of our lives, no matter how much time has passed.
