After acting school he was discovered by Jean Cocteau and appeared in a wartime production of Les parents terribles ("The Terrible Parents"). His first feature film came in 1946 with his role in Les portes de la nuit ("The Doors of the Night"). He later went on to perform in 80 films including The Pianist (1998).
In 1965 he began a second career as a singer, with the help of Simone Signoret and her husband Yves Montand. Reggiani became one of the most acclaimed performers of French "Chanson" ("song") and although he was in his 40s, his bad-boy image made him popular with both young and older listeners. His best known songs include "Les loups sont entres dans Paris" ("The Wolves Have Entered Paris") and "La femme qui est dans mon lit." ("The Woman Who Is In My Bed").
In later life he became a painter and gave a number of exhibitions of his artwork.
Serge Reggiani died of a heart attack at the age of 82, one day after the death of another well known French singer Sacha Distel. He is interred in the Cimetière du Montparnasse.

Et le phare qui luit
La nuit sur La Rochelle...
Près des eaux cadencées,
Tu te voyais danser
Ta vie romanichelle.
Le vent était porteur
D'un air de Cole Porter
Tu rêvais de Kelly,
Donen et Minelli
Et moi... je t'attendais.
Noëlle... Noëlle
Dans une vie,
Y a pas d'surprise,
Y a qu'des cadeaux.
Moi, j'ai la pluie
Dans ma valise
Et ton radeau
Et ton radeau.
Et puis la M.G.M
Un jour t'a dit: "je t'aime",
Hollywood t'a étreinte,
Face au planning qui tue,
Tu as compris que tu
N'aimais pas les contraintes.
Alors, Broadway la folle,
La rue du Music-Hall
D'Astaire et de Doris Day,
S'est fendue d'un néon
Couleur d'accordéon
Et moi... je t'attendais.
Noëlle... Noëlle
Dans une vie,
Y a pas d'surprise,
Y a qu'des cadeaux.
Moi, j'ai la pluie
Dans ma valise
Et ton radeau
Et ton radeau.
Oui mais New-York, New-York
Est un bateau-remorque
Où s'ennuient les sirènes.
Tu es revenue voir
Esméralda le soir
Danser avec la Seine.
C'est là qu'au Bistingo
Je suis tombé dingo
De toi et je t'ai plu !...
On avait rendez-vous
Juste à la seconde où
Je ne t'attendais plus.
Noëlle... Noëlle
Dans une vie,
Y a pas d'surprise,
Y a qu'des cadeaux.
Moi, j'ai la pluie
Dans ma valise
Et ton radeau
Et ton radeau.
Comment te dire mes
Vertiges de t'aimer,
Mes peurs toujours nouvelles,
Moi qui, de temps en temps,
Me sens si peu Adam,
Te sens tellement Noëlle !...
Comment te dire qu'il
Fera beau sur mon île,
Le jour où j'étendrai
Mes regrets et ma peau,
Noëlle il fera beau
Puisque je t'attendrai...
Noëlle... Noëlle
Dans une vie,
Y a pas d'surprise,
Y a qu'des cadeaux.
Moi, j'ai la pluie
Dans ma valise
Et ton radeau
Et ton radeau.
The lyrics to Serge Reggiani's song Noëlle tell the story of a woman named Noëlle who dreams of dancing and living a roma life near the waters of La Rochelle. She smells the rain and watches the lighthouse shine at night, hearing the music of Cole Porter in the wind. She dreams of being like Gene Kelly, Stanley Donen, and Vincente Minnelli, and the singer waits for her. However, her desire to break free from Hollywood's constraints makes her move on to the bright lights of Broadway, where she becomes a star. But Noëlle is not happy and returns to see Esmeralda dance on the Seine River. This time, the singer falls in love with her and becomes the one waiting for her. The song ends with the singer promising Noëlle that he will wait for her on his island, where the sun will shine.
The lyrics to Noëlle evoke a feeling of nostalgia as the singer recalls the journey of Noëlle from La Rochelle to Hollywood, Broadway, and back. The song portrays the desire to be free and pursue one's dreams and the consequences of chasing them. Serge Reggiani's voice delivers the story with sensitivity and emotion, capturing the essence of the lyrics.
