Lied von der Gedankenfreiheit
Walter Mossmann Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Finstre Zeiten waren das
Als man die Gedanken jagte
Und dabei die Köpfe traf!
Wenn der Volksmund Lieder plärrte
Gegen Papst und Königshaus
Riss man ihm auch gleich die Zunge
Mit den Lästerliedern aus –
Litten unter der Zensur
Und der dünne Straßensänger
Saß im Knast zur Schweigekur!
Diese Zeiten sind vorbei:
Die Gedanken sind frei!
Heute, heute sind das helle
Helle Zeiten sind das heut' –
Ja, ich sag euch, dass mich heute
Die Gedankenfreiheit freut!
Neulich schrieb ich meine wahre
Meinung von der Bundeswehr
Und ich trug sie hin ins Funkhaus
Hin zu einem Redakteur –
Ach, der hat mich nicht erschlagen
Nicht gefoltert, nicht gepfählt –
Bloß die Sendung nicht gesendet
Und jetzt mangelt mir das Geld!
Also bleibt es dabei:
Die Gedanken sind frei!
Meine Freundin, die ist Lehrerin
Hat einen blonden Schopf
Außen blond und innen helle
Und sehr hart ist auch der Kopf!
Sie erklärte ihren Schülern:
"Auch der Papst ist bloß ein Mann
Ohne Kinder, ohne Pille
Und den geht mein Bauch nichts an!"
Der Direktor ist katholisch
Kugelrund und gar nicht grob
Und er schrieb ihren Brief –
Und heute hat sie keinen Job!
Also bleibet es dabei:
Also bleibet es dabei:
Die Gedanken sind frei!
Also sieht man, dass es die finster'n
Finstern Zeiten nicht mehr gibt –
Grad' die höhere Kritik ist doch
In unserm Staat beliebt!
Doch man muss sie mächtig heben
Aus dem grauen Alltagsdunst
Dann sagt auch mal ein Minister:
"Schön und kritisch ist die Kunst!"
Und der große Künstler achte
Dass er nur nach Beifall schielt –
Schielt er nämlich nach Veränderung
Hat er bald ausgespielt!
Also bleibet es dabei:
Nur die Gedanken sind frei!
Fragt sich bloß, was in den Köpfen
Da noch frei ist, fragt sich bloß –
Wenn du mal die Wahrheit ausspuckst
Bist du schon die Arbeit los!
Keine Arbeit, keine Kohle
Licht aus, Kohldampf, Bude kalt
Also lieber halbe Wahrheit –
And're Hälfte wird bezahlt!
Ach, gespalten ist die Zunge
Ach, verfinstert ist der Sinn –
Halbe Lügen kriegen Junge
Halbe Wahrheit schmilzt dahin!
Und ich bleibe dabei:
Die Gedanken sind nicht frei!
The lyrics to Walter Mossmann's "Lied von der Gedankenfreiheit" describe the historical restrictions on freedom of thought and expression, particularly in the context of political and religious dissent. Mossmann reflects on a time when people risked physical harm, imprisonment, and censorship for speaking out against the government and the powerful institutions that controlled society. He contrasts this with the present day, which he believes is a more enlightened time where people can express their opinions and beliefs more freely. However, he also acknowledges that there are still limitations to freedom of thought and expression, particularly in the workplace where speaking out against bosses and policies can lead to consequences such as job loss and financial hardship.
Mossmann describes several specific examples of individuals who have been affected by limitations on freedom of thought and expression. These include a singer who was jailed for performing critical songs, a teacher who lost her job for expressing opinions that conflicted with her school's Catholic director, and a worker who faced repercussions for speaking out about unfair labor practices. Through these stories, Mossmann highlights the ongoing struggles that people face when attempting to express their true opinions and beliefs in various contexts.
Overall, Mossmann's lyrics provide a thoughtful commentary on the state of freedom of thought and expression in contemporary society, acknowledging both the progress that has been made and the work that still needs to be done to ensure that people are truly free to think and speak their minds without fear of retribution.

When the people sang loudly
Gegen Papst und Königshaus
Against pope and royal house
Riss man ihm auch gleich die Zunge
Their tongue was immediately torn out
Mit den Lästerliedern aus
With their insulting songs
Selbst die allergrößten Geister
Even the greatest minds
Litten unter der Zensur
Suffered from censorship
Und der dünne Straßensänger
And the thin street singer
Saß im Knast zur Schweigekur!
Was put in jail to keep silence!

Ach, der hat mich nicht erschlagen
Oh, he didn't kill me
Nicht gefoltert, nicht gepfählt –
Not tortured, not impaled -

Meckerte er laut
He complained loudly
Weil Mercedes die Arbeiter
Because Mercedes is fleecing its workers
Um den Arbeitslohn beklaut!
By stealing their wages!
Sein Chef hat ihm nicht das Maul gestopft
His boss didn't keep him quiet

In unserm Staat beliebt!
Is popular in our state!
Doch man muss sie mächtig heben
But we must raise it mightily
Aus dem grauen Alltagsdunst
From the gray everyday mist
Dann sagt auch mal ein Minister:
Then even a minister will say:
"Schön und kritisch ist die Kunst!"
"Art is beautiful and critical!"
Und der große Künstler achte

So it remains:
Nur die Gedanken sind frei!
Only thoughts are free!

Just wonder what is in the heads
Da noch frei ist, fragt sich bloß –
What is still free, just wonder -
Wenn du mal die Wahrheit ausspuckst
When you spit out the truth
Bist du schon die Arbeit los!
You lose your job!
Keine Arbeit, keine Kohle
No work, no money
Licht aus, Kohldampf, Bude kalt
Lights out, hungry, and a cold apartment
Also lieber halbe Wahrheit –
So it's better to stick to half-truths -
And're Hälfte wird bezahlt!
The other half will be paid for!
Ach, gespalten ist die Zunge
Oh, the tongue is divided
Ach, verfinstert ist der Sinn –
Oh, the mind is darkened -
Halbe Lügen kriegen Junge
Half-truths deceive the young
Halbe Wahrheit schmilzt dahin!
Half-truths melt away!
Und ich bleibe dabei:
And I stick to it:
Die Gedanken sind nicht frei!
Thoughts are not free!
