Trop tard trop tard trop tard trop tard
Trop tard trop tard trop tard!
The lyrics to Léo Ferré's song Le Temps Du Plastique speak to the idea of the disposable culture of the plastic age, and the cost that comes with it. Ferré suggests that if we could put the time of plastic to music, we might gain some benefits in terms of economics, fashion, and even joy, but there would still be the fundamental loss of time and meaning that comes with creating a world of superficiality. The lyrics appeal directly to the idea of mass production and consumerism, suggesting that we trade quality for quantity, and real value for plastic baubles. Ferré criticizes these societal trends, using his radio-friendly style to highlight the pitfalls of a world gone mad with industrialization.
In many ways, Le Temps Du Plastique is a protest song, a commentary on the ills of modern society that were beginning to be seen in the 1960s. Ferré's lyrics speak to a deep sense of disillusionment with the status quo and the desire for something more meaningful. He speaks to the yearning for a deeper human connection that is missing from our disposable culture, and suggests that we need to rebel against the forces that are driving us towards a world of plastic.
Overall, Le Temps Du Plastique is a powerful and moving song that speaks truth to power, and encourages us to seek a better world for ourselves and each other.

If we turned the era of plastic
Into music, music, music
We might occasionally waste our time,
But we'd also gain plastic jewelry and money.
Bien plus économiques miques miques
Et bien plus intéressant que les diamants
Que l'on pend que l'on pend au cou des gens
Plastic jewelry is much
More affordable, affordable, affordable
And much more exciting than diamonds,
Which people hang around their necks.
The age of plastic
Is much more fantastic, fantastic, fantastic
One can see springtime go by
Taking time to make paper flowers.
If we made the era of pin-ups
About the pick-up truck, truck, truck
We could save time and money,
Without losing anything.
Except for the owl, but you can multiply the owl,
By turning your pick-up truck inside out, out, out,
Without even talking to those chicks
Who are pathetic, pathetic, pathetic.
Car le temps des pinups
Passera et puis heup puis heup puis heup
Ces pin-up que l'on pique
Et heup et heup
Because the era of pin-ups
Will come and go, go, go
Those pin-ups that we steal,
And poof, poof!
Sur les murs des maisons
Des cons des cons
On the walls of homes,
Are fools, fools.
If we made the era of brass bands
At the train station, station, station
We wouldn't waste our time,
Occasionally.
While also gaining
Something to bring us joy,
Because a guitar is better
Than the fanfare of glory, glory, glory.
And those fancy, plump, well-known lounges
Where we spin gossip and tails,
Because the era of brass bands
Is vanishing rapidly, rapidly, rapidly!
On y voit des a-ca-ca-dé-mies
Quoi crever comme crever comme
Comme tous les hommes
We see academies there,
Inevitably dying like all men.
Trop tard trop tard trop tard trop tard
Trop tard trop tard trop tard!
If we put the era of pin-ups
At the train station and made plastic brass bands,
Then poof, we'd be free of worry.
It's not too late, too late,
Too late, too late, too late, too late,
Too late, too late, too late!
