His father was a UNESCO employee and his mother is from Guadeloupe. Many of the chansons he sings were written by Étienne Roda-Gil, a long time collaborator. His brother, Gérard Leclerc, is a political commentator on France 2.
For a time he was involved with French actress Miou-Miou, who in 1978 bore him a daughter, Jeanne Herry. Like her father, Jeanne has pursued a career in show business, albeit as an actress and comedian rather than as a singer.
Julien Clerc owes his fame in France to his leading role in the 1969 French language adaptation of the musical Hair. Since then he has sung a great many popular songs, and is generally considered one of the greatest francophone musicians of his generation. In 2003, he was appointed as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees after transferring the rights to his hugely popular song, Partir, to the UN.

Aujourd'hui, reste ici
The song Souffrir Par Toi N'est Pas Souffrir by Julien Clerc is about the challenging and complicated nature of a relationship. The lyrics describe a situation where the singer is still holding onto the memories of a past love, despite the pain it may cause. He admits that seeing her smile in a photo brings back fond memories but also causes him great anguish. However, he acknowledges that leaving her made him feel more alive than ever, almost like dying or creating joy.
The singer tells his former lover that he is ready to move on, that he no longer wants to feel the pain and the agony of love again. He asks her to come back, but only if she is ready to leave the past behind and start anew. He assures her that they can create new memories and that he wants to stay in the present.
The overall message of the song is that love can be both beautiful and painful, and that it is possible to move on from a past love and create a new one. It is a bittersweet song that conveys the duality of love and relationships.

Softly, without fainting, without lying, without suffering
Aujourd'hui, je te dis
Today, I tell you
Souffrir par toi n'est pas souffrir
To suffer for you is not to suffer
It's like dying or making someone laugh
It's to distance oneself from the world of the living
In the forest, only seeing the dead tree

Doucement, sans pâlir, sans mentir, sans souffrir
Softly, without fainting, without lying, without suffering
Aujourd'hui, je te dis
Today, I tell you
Tous les voyages ne veulent rien dire
All journeys don't mean anything
I know things that would make you laugh
Moi qui entassais des souvenirs par paresse
Me who accumulated memories out of laziness
It's your old sweaters that I caress
Maintenant, comme avant
Now, like before
Doucement, restons-en au présent pour la vie
Softly, let's stay in the present for life
Aujourd'hui, reste ici
Today, stay here
