Mia was born in 1947 in Bagnara Calabra (province of Reggio Calabria, southern Italy), but soon she moved to Rome with her sister (Loredana Bertè) and her friend Renato Zero. Both of them would eventually become successful singers too.
She recorded her first records as Mimì Bertè, but she soon decided to change her name to the more appealing Mia Martini.
Her biggest hits were "Piccolo Uomo", which was recorded in several languages, "Almeno tu nell'universo", which is considered her masterpiece and has been covered by several famous Italian singers including Mina and Elisa, and "Minuetto" among many others.
She represented Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest twice: in 1977 with "Libera (song)" (13th out of 18), and in 1992 with "Rapsodia" (4th out of 23).
Her career ended tragically in 1995 when she was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her apartment at Cardano al Campo, near Milan.

Cecilia
Mia Martini Lyrics

Cecilia va nel carcere a trovar suo marì
Caro marito mio, 'na cosa te devo dì
Ghe xe un capitano che vuol dormir con mi
Dormi, va là, Cecilia, salva la vita a mi
Prepara i linsioi bianchi e l'letto ben fornì
Cos'è la mezanote, Cecilia dà un sospir
Cos'è la mezanote, Cecilia dà un sospir
Mi go 'na smania in petto che me par de morir
Co'xe nel far del giorno Cecilia va al balcon
La vede el suo marito tacado a picolòn
Boja de un capitano ti ti me ga tradì
Ti m'ha tolto l'onore e la vita al mio marì
The lyrics of Mia Martini's song "Cecilia" tell a story of a woman named Cecilia who visits her husband in prison. She begins by addressing her beloved husband, informing him that there is something she needs to tell him. She reveals that there is a captain who wants to sleep with her, and she pleads with him to sleep, urging him to save her life. Cecilia then prepares the bed, with white linen sheets, hoping to entice the captain to leave her alone.
However, Cecilia becomes overwhelmed by her emotions and lets out a sigh, wondering what midnight is. She questions why she can't sleep and confesses that she has a restlessness in her chest that makes her feel like she's dying. As the new day breaks, Cecilia goes to the balcony to find her husband spying on her. She accuses him of being a fool to trust the captain, blaming him for taking away her husband's honor and life.
The lyrics of "Cecilia" depict a woman caught in a difficult and unjust situation. She is torn between protecting her own life and staying loyal to her husband, who is imprisoned. The song explores themes of betrayal, loyalty, and the sacrifices one may have to make to survive in challenging circumstances.
