Mia was born in 1947 in Bagnara Calabra (province of Reggio Calabria, southern Italy), but soon she moved to Rome with her sister (Loredana Bertè) and her friend Renato Zero. Both of them would eventually become successful singers too.
She recorded her first records as Mimì Bertè, but she soon decided to change her name to the more appealing Mia Martini.
Her biggest hits were "Piccolo Uomo", which was recorded in several languages, "Almeno tu nell'universo", which is considered her masterpiece and has been covered by several famous Italian singers including Mina and Elisa, and "Minuetto" among many others.
She represented Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest twice: in 1977 with "Libera (song)" (13th out of 18), and in 1992 with "Rapsodia" (4th out of 23).
Her career ended tragically in 1995 when she was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her apartment at Cardano al Campo, near Milan.

Picnic
Mia Martini Lyrics

di quercie invecchiate
il primo picnic con te,
un po' isolati
perdona amore ma,
ma resta qui
prepara tu intanto
un volo e son qui.
mi fermerei no
oramai, tutto intorno sento
alberi e amici, ma come
sarà un'illusione,
rivedo chi mi chiamò
per nome correndo,
non eri tu.
E il vento corse sopra i rami,
poi si fermò
tra queste rive esser soli,
lui se ne andò
la mente vola, un nodo in gola
gli occhi chiusi perché
che dolce la sera,
se fosse ancora qui.
Il fiume capì, e lento parlò
un po' di più
dei miei passi, le incertezze
nei suoi no
io con la mente e col corpo
non so per quanto lottai
lui come grande cometa
non si voltò.
Scusa amore se un po'
tardato io ho
il primo picnic con te qui,
un po' isolati
io vorrei ma dirti che,
che prima di te
una cometa mai,
non crederai
e il vento corse sopra i rami,
poi si fermò
fra queste rive esser soli,
lui se ne andò
la mente vola
un nodo in gola
gli occhi chiusi perché,
che dolce la sera
se fossi ancora qui.
La mente vola,
un nodo in gola
gli occhi chiusi perché...
che dolce la sera,
se fossi ancora qui.
The lyrics of Mia Martini's song "Picnic" describe the memories of a past picnic with a loved one under the shade of aging oak trees. The singer asks for forgiveness if they arrive late, but promises to be there soon. As they embark on their journey, they reflect on the beauty of nature surrounding them and the anticipation of seeing their loved one again. However, upon arrival, they realize that it was all just an illusion, as the person they were expecting was not there. Despite this disappointment, they continue to revel in their surroundings, with the river whispering its secrets and the wind rustling the leaves above them. The singer laments their loss, wishing that their loved one were still there to share in the beauty of the evening.
The song captures the essence of nostalgia and the bittersweet memories of a past love. The mention of the river and the trees create a serene atmosphere, which contrasts with the singer's inner turmoil. The lyrics are beautifully crafted, and the use of repetition reinforces the idea of longing and the desire for the past. The chorus is especially poignant, with the repeated lines "The mind flies, a knot in the throat, eyes closed because, how sweet the evening, if you were still here."
Overall, "Picnic" is a beautiful and heartfelt song that captures the feelings of longing and nostalgia that are so common in human experience.
