I started getting into the quartets of Shostakovitch when I was in my early twenties along with other modern examples of the genre. Then I worked backwards through time. I am so glad I can appreciate these no less than brilliant quartets by Hadyn with a lot of my life still left.

Superb 9:15 someone who knows about these things said that they are all playing on the lowest string - C major sounds like some remote key :)

With his quartets OP; 33, Haydn told that he intended to revisit the genre of the string quartet.

For me the 1st movement is the most "birdly", followed by the trio of the 2nd movt, then the 4th and finally the 3rd. 1243 then. Or am I wrong

Robert Hoskins
