Mozart was summon’d by the Archbishop of Salzburg (Hieronymus Colloredo) to Vienna in March of 1781 (M. was relishing the Carnival Season 1781 after so many months of sweating labour on his opera Idomoneo (‘I’ve re-written so many arias that I have compil’d enough Musick for two operas at least !’ he wrote back to his father in January during the rehearsals —it premier’d 26 Jan 1781 in Munich) —apparently Leopold who was not invited to Colloredo’s visit to Vienna

—‘Everywhere I go I am applauded & recognis’d but not by the archbooby who makes me dine with the other ‘servants’ — at least the lout has seated me above the cooks !’

In Vienna with Colloredo’s musical retinue was Francesco Ceccarelli who came to Salzburg in 1777 (Mozart dedicated his Mass K. 275 of that year to him & re-wrote part of the vocal lines of Exultate Iubilate K. 165 for him also that year); he compos’d (probably from some unus’d material discarded from Idomoneo) the accompagnato recitativo ed Aria K. 374 in E-flat for him (the text is taken from Act III scene vii of da Gammera’s 1773 libretto for Paisiello in Milan call’d Sismano nel Mogul) completed on 8 April 1781.

Here is a brief summary of the plot of the opera : The treacherous king of Persia Sismano arrives to celebrate the wedding of his (adopted) daughter Zeira to Siface—but the whole set up is a scam to kill Siface & replace him with one of his generals Idreno (already engag’d to Arsinda); but privately King Sismano informs Zeira that she is only his ward not his flesh & blood & wishes to marry her himself — fearing for Siface’s life she gets him to escape then she is dragg’d to the altar in a forc’d marriage —meanwhile Adreno shews up with his retinue of Moguls to stop the wedding at which moment Sismano vows to execute Zeira on the spot, prevented only by the rush of the crowd protecting her - Sismano is arrested — but then the happy couple forgives the King & everybody lives happily ever after .

Here is a loose, rough translation of the Italian text of da Gammera’s Libretto—(Recitativo Accompagnato ed Aria in E-flat) ‘A Questo Seno...Or che il Cielo’ K. 374 by the 25-year-old Mozart : Act III scene vii

Accompagnato : ‘Come back to this heart of mine, my idol ! O gods ! How many fears & tears have you cost your fiancee ! You are alive ! Oh Joy ! O Certainty ! O Reward ! O Hope ! O Love ! Merciful gods, by bestowing such a gift of leniency upon me, you cause me nearly to forget all of my past sufferings !

Aria (in E-flat) : ‘Now that Heaven hath brought you back to me, oh most Cherish’d Part of my heart—no one who has not experienc’d true love can comprehend my joy ! To my own heart your previously horrendous deeds, o gods, has turn’d into objects of thanksgiving as every trace of my earlier griefs flee from me entirely !’

The recitativo Accompagnato (and the opening theme of the Aria) may well have bas’d on some of the abovemention’d ‘unus’d skizze’ for Idomoneo—if the 1780 Munich paper types are anything to go by for what he us’d for it...this from a 25-year old composer who had at last come into his own as an independent musician—and his heated altercation with ‘that baboon of an archbooby’ in May 1781 displays his confidence that Vienna was more of his ‘true home’ rather than the provincial mentality that unfortunately prevail’d at Salzburg...
