Mozart compos’d this grand Recitativo ed Aria (K. 368, in F-major) in late January 1781 in Munich during the week of the premiere of Idomoneo (probably making use of an un finish’d draft for Idomoneo which he later discarded) for his then-beloved (& unrequited) Aloysia Weber (Lange) who, to judge from the vocal pyrotechnics he wrote for her, must have had a range far beyond the norm—for Aloysia’s particular voice he writes an F in alt (see bars 150 & 151) held for a full bar then another full bar on the neighboring E-flat—a full 4th & minor 3rd above the ‘dreaded’ top C that even the most stalwart of Sopranos are loathe to attempt...

The Italian text is taken from Metastasio’s Demofoonte (a Libretto he had written originally for composer Antonio Caldara, which premiered on 4 Nov 1733) and set over 75 times between 1733 and 1810 by a bevy of successful 18th Century operatic composer movers & shakers (including Vivaldi (1734), Francesco Ciampi (1735), Egido Duni (1737) Giuseppe Brivio (1738), Christof Willibald Von Gluck (1743), Galuppi (1749), Giancino Cocchi (1754), Antonio Boroni (1762), Mattia Vento (London, 1765 attended by the Mozart family), Myslevecek (1769 & 1775), Nicolo Jommelli (1770), Sarti (1771) Anfossi & Berenzovsky (1773), Alessandri (1783), Angelo Tarchi (1786), Marcos Portugallo (1794) & many others...Mozart set (5) arias from this very same Libretto between 1765 & 1781 so it could be considered one of the most well known libretti of the 18th Century—Mozart’s setting here is taken from Act I scene iv—where the king of Thrace Demofoonte’s son (Prince Timante, secretly married to the ‘virgin’ (!) Dircia who is next in line to be sacrificed to Thracian Apollo) bewails her fate :

Here is the English text (loosely translated from the Italian in this video) :

Recitativo Accompagnato

TIMANTE (Demofoonte Act I scene iv)

‘What did poor Dircea ever do to you, o stars— to deserve such a fate so imbued with misfortune aim’d against her? After all it was you yourselves that inspir’d the chaste affection in both our souls guarding it day & night—Ye gods, I am confounded by what has happen’d ! I am stricken by such a blow my heart is racing to the point where I am about to go insane !

Aria (F-Major)

I had hop’d that by the time I had reach’d the shoreline the tempest would have blown over—but no ! I can still feel the blast knocking me towards one treacherous cliff—then as if I were headed towards another one—even more treacherous than the first !’

Mozart’s poignant setting of the delicately contriv’d recitativo accompagnato followed by such a brutal display of vocal gymnastics makes this particular aria one of the most difficult pieces to sing properly in the repertoire — but there are some ‘glib gullets’ out there in the world right this very minute who can tackle it nonetheless — good luck to them !!!!!

akherousia

you sing this aria and after that you drop dead... wow, that's some crazy tessitura...

Too much weight put into the voice, just like Edda Moser, Simone Kermes, Edita Gruberova... sure, it's loud, but it gets heavy in the runs and from high c on it gets screamy.
While this rather dramatic vocal approach impresses more, it lacks elegance. So far only Natalie Dessay shows ease and elegance while singing these concert arias. Sure, she used to be a light coloratura soprano, unlike the naturally heavier voices of the above mentioned ones.
