After acting school he was discovered by Jean Cocteau and appeared in a wartime production of Les parents terribles ("The Terrible Parents"). His first feature film came in 1946 with his role in Les portes de la nuit ("The Doors of the Night"). He later went on to perform in 80 films including The Pianist (1998).
In 1965 he began a second career as a singer, with the help of Simone Signoret and her husband Yves Montand. Reggiani became one of the most acclaimed performers of French "Chanson" ("song") and although he was in his 40s, his bad-boy image made him popular with both young and older listeners. His best known songs include "Les loups sont entres dans Paris" ("The Wolves Have Entered Paris") and "La femme qui est dans mon lit." ("The Woman Who Is In My Bed").
In later life he became a painter and gave a number of exhibitions of his artwork.
Serge Reggiani died of a heart attack at the age of 82, one day after the death of another well known French singer Sacha Distel. He is interred in the Cimetière du Montparnasse.

Quand enfin elle me verra
Lorsque mes yeux vont s'ouvrir
The opening lines of Serge Reggiani's song, L'armée du brouillard or "The Army of Fog" in English, ask the question of how long the march has been in the night, in the tunnel of life, taking small and hesitant steps. The song then progresses to ask the fundamental questions of where and why one is going, especially considering how some people move forward while others lag behind, and why some push while others pull back. It's a commentary on the human experience, highlighting the confusion and uncertainty that many face throughout their lives.
The lyrics investigate the notion of the sky, what it represents, and if it is obtainable, with the image of the tiny white point in the distance leading to questions about whether or not it is genuine. Reggiani ponders on the herd mentality people show in their lives and how they seem to lack their own identity, with questions of how many are in the herd, and who is leading it. The song is then brought back to a more personal level with an exploration of the meaning of companionship through the metaphor of the held hand, marking a shared sense of direction throughout one's journey.
Overall, Reggiani's L'armée du brouillard is an introspective and thought-provoking song that reflects on aspects of the human experience that many people may feel but not know how to articulate.
