When he was five years old he discovered Music most notably Kurt Weill, as he played harmonica. He was also a Choirboy in the church at Wingersheim and played basket-ball. Bashung started a band with musicians met in Royan, a new band playing in Restaurants, Hotels and most of all the American bases. his career started with some difficulties with the release of his first single at 19 years of age “Pourquoi rêvez-vous des États-Unis ?” in 1966.
The song "Elle S'Fait Rougir Toute Seule" by Alain Bashung speaks about a woman who seems to be living in her own world. The singer speaks about imagining the woman's shadow on the wallpaper, indicating that he is not physically with her. The woman is described as living in a candy, which could symbolize a world of fantasy, pleasure, or even addiction. She listens to music in her head, which makes her blush, and the singer warns her that it's not good for her. This could be interpreted as her being lost in her desires, insecurities, or inner thoughts, and not engaging with reality or others.
The second verse of the song seems to describe the woman's appearance and impact on the singer. She has dark circles around her eyes because of a crowd of outlaws, which can be taken literally or figuratively. The singer states that he never counted them, which might suggest that he is not interested in the source of her problems but just cares for her. He imagines her in ways that she doesn't even imagine herself, which again highlights their distance or difference in perspectives. The repetition of "Elle s'fait rougir toute seule" emphasizes the woman's introverted behavior or the embarrassment that she feels when she is alone with her thoughts.
The last verse of the song is repeated twice, and the singer speaks directly to the woman, calling her "Baby." He reassures her that he is doing fine and sober, implying that perhaps she is not. He tells her that she can search him, and he has nothing left, creating a sense of distance or even mistrust between them. The singer imagines the woman's lover, who is described as a dwarf in a widow's suit, sleeping next to her with new shoes. The description can be taken as surreal or symbolic, emphasizing the woman's detachment from reality or her unconventional tastes. The singer laments that he doesn't need to hold her hands anymore, perhaps indicating that their relationship has changed, or she has become independent. The final repetition of the chorus creates a sense of unresolved tension or longing, as if the singer is still attached to the woman's mystery or allure.
