Despite his short life, his rapid pace of composition resulted in more than 800 works of virtually every Western classical genre of his time. Many of these compositions are acknowledged as pinnacles of the symphonic, concertante, chamber, operatic, and choral repertoire. Mozart is widely regarded as among the greatest composers in the history of Western music, with his music admired for its "melodic beauty, its formal elegance and its richness of harmony and texture".
Born in Salzburg, then in the Holy Roman Empire and currently in Austria, Mozart showed prodigious ability from his earliest childhood. Already competent on keyboard and violin, he composed from the age of five and performed before European royalty. His father took him on a grand tour of Europe and then three trips to Italy. At 17, he was a musician at the Salzburg court but grew restless and traveled in search of a better position.
While visiting Vienna in 1781, Mozart was dismissed from his Salzburg position. He stayed in Vienna, where he achieved fame but little financial security. During his final years there, he composed many of his best-known symphonies, concertos, and operas. His Requiem was largely unfinished by the time of his death at the age of 35, the circumstances of which are uncertain and much mythologized.

My brother (piano) and I (violin) tried to practice this back in the day. We were able to play three of the movements from Beethoven's Spring Sonata, although certain passages were always muddy. I remember thinking that Mozart's music sounded 'easier' than most. We never even got through the first movement. I couldn't handle the virtuosity that is disguised under his incredible grace. Unless you have tried to play it, you can't understand its challenges.

The greatest violin sonata ever and the obvious model for Beethoven's "Kreutzer", only that in Beethoven movements 2+3 are markedly inferior to the 1st (as noted also by Tolstoy). In Mozart the 2nd movement is one of the most profound in all music and the contrapuntal richness and polyrhythms of the 3rd - sounding almost like 20th century music - are incomparable too.
While it cannot be said that it is neglected, this sonata certainly does not enjoy the fame that it deserves.

Yes, it is a bit in the shadow of the e minor sonata - a wonder of its own and the big B major sonata and of course of Beethoven. While the B major sonata is smooth, neat and brilliant in its "selfevidentness" and well balanced it can't really be compared with this sonata, which is Mozart's biggest and most ambitous sonata and in my opinion his best. I love the mix of bitterness and pain that is present in all three movements. It's incrediblely expressive and musically powerful. The second movement has a beauty that cannot be described. Note the Bach-like rythms in the first movement - for me it is celar that this has been inspired by Bach.
Mozart's best pieces for solo piano are his b minor adagio and a minor rondo in my opinion and there we have a similar stuation. For various reasons they fall somewhat in the shadow of some other Mozart pieces, of which some don't quite deserve the fame that they've get, I think.

I am thinking that the main reason this sonata is not as appreciated as it deserves is that Beethoven is the greater composer of the two when it comes to writing sonatas - be it piano sonatas or violin sonatas. So even if I have always thoguht that this sonata is fully in class with Beethoven, Mozart don't really have other sonatas to match Beethoven's greatest sonatas and that counts for something when it comes to Beethoven's reputation, I think.
So... even if the e minor sonata is not at the same level artistically and chambermusically as this one, it is nevertheless highly expressive and has something to offer that Beethoven does not and perhaps this is the reason it has become more famous than this A major sonata.

Not trying to argue this, but have you listened to Piano sonata for Four Hand, K. 497? IMO that is the true piece where Mozart hit it out of the park, outdoing himself in every aspect of writing sonatas

Aside from being sonatas for violin and piano in A, they have absolutely nothing in common. They are completely different in terms of form so calling this sonata an "obvious model" for Beethoven's Kreutzer sonata is sheer nonsense.
