This is a solo song in a two-part polyphonic texture in arioso style; all three continuo instruments (lute, cello, and organ) play the same bass line and add complementary chords. The piece begins with an emblem (Nigra sum) in a different style in the classic "topic-comment" form of early 17th century song . At times, the solo voice sounds a superior pedal, and at times the continuo plays a sort of "ruffled homophony" in which the accompaniment is similar to the solo part but slightly offset.
