Just for the record: Mozart never met CPE Bach, and consequently therefore, could not have taken lessons from him.

Additionally, barely a single note ever written by Mozart sounds remotely like anything written by CPE (and vice-versa).

Not sure why Mozart has been mentioned at all in relation to a performance of CPE Bach’s Magnificat.

Apart from the evidence of your own ears, a glance at the index in any Mozart biography or a copy of his letters, the search for references to CPE Bach will reveal just how little of an influence CPE was on Mozart - CPE will barely be mentioned.

Are you confusing CPE Bach with his younger half-brother JC Bach ?

J S Bach wasn't as rediscovered as some believe with either Forkel's biography of J S Bach or with the urban myth of Felix Mendelssohn performance of the St Mathews Passion being the great rediscovery. Both Felix and his sister Fanny were taught the works of Bach in their youth. St. Thomas Church in Leipzig continued to perform some of J S Bach church music as early as 1753. J C Bach was a source of J S Bach's music when he emigrated to Italy in the 1760's, subsequently, Dr. Charles Burney championed J S Bach's music (he possessed a copy of the Well Tempered Clavier. The continued popularity of J S Bach is witnessed as Haydn possessed a copy of the Well Tempered Clavier, Mozart arrange String music from the WTC BK 2 Fugues, and Clementi and Beethoven had studied J S Bach's work in their youth, and performed both by the time that CPE Bach furthered revised and performed the Magnificat in D in 1786; a time when music publishers where requesting Fugues from C P E Bach, Breitkopf in Leipzig made hand written copies of many of J S Bach's works (published and otherwise) from their founding. Mozart’s own letters relate (humorously) of his wife’s pleading with him to compose more fugues (she fell in love with them) and to write them down this time...and after Van Swieten's introduction of J S B Well Tempered Clavier (Historical context the WTC would not be published until after 1800, and simultaneously by three separate publishing houses. Mozart letters tell of Mrs. Mozart desire to hear nothing else other than the Fugues. Both W F Bach and C P E Bach performed some of their father's religious works at their respective jobs; C P E Bach's Heilig (German Sanctus), Wq. 217, Emanual Bach combined together with the Credo from his Father's Mass in B minor.
A year after Emanuel Bach's death, Mozart paid a visit to Leipzig, and to St. Thomas’s Church, whose cantor, Johann Doles, studied with Sebastian Bach as a boy: (from an eyewitness account)"At the instigation of Doles, the cantor of the Thomasschule in Leipzig, the choir surprised Mozart by performing the motet for double choir, 'Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied,' by the patriarch of German music, Sebastian Bach. As soon as the choir had sung a few bars, Mozart started; after a few more he exclaimed: 'What is that?' And now his whole soul seemed to be centered in his ears. When the song was ended, he cried out with delight: 'Now, here is
something one can learn from!'" He was informed that this school, where Sebastian Bach had once been cantor, possessed a complete collection of his motets, which were preserved as if they were a saint's relics. 'That is right, that is fine,' he exclaimed. 'Let me see them' There was, however, no complete score of these songs. He therefore took the separate parts, and then, what a pleasure it was for the quiet observer to see how eagerly Mozart sat
down, the parts all around him, held in both hands, on his knees, on the nearest chairs. Forgetting everything else, he did not stand up again until he had looked through all the music of Sebastian Bach. He asked
for copies...." (source The New Bach Reader, David, Mendel, & Wolf).
Muzio Clementi's protege John Field played the entire Well Tempered Clavier to acclaim (and from memory) when master and pupil visited Paris in 1802

Mendelssohn's teacher Zelter had an extensive collection of J S Bach manuscripts. Mendelssohn's great aunt, Sarah Levy, had made special effort to arrange for her great nephew to receive instruction from Zelter. Sarah Levy was the favorite student of W F Bach; she commissioned C P E Bach's dual concerto for fortepiano and harpsichord and after C P E Bach's death, paid to support Bach's widow for the rest of her life.

The sister of Frederick the Great had a collection of music of J S Bach and G F Handel, including a copy of the posthumously published Art of Fugue, which Count Van Swieten arranged for Beethoven to have access. Van Swieten was a patron of C P E Bach, Haydn, and Beethoven (who dedicated his Symphony to Van Swieten).
J S Bach may not have been mainstream, however a number of connoisseurs circulated his manuscripts and published works; Gluck arranged as an aria a dance from the Bb Partita of the ClavierUebung.
Beethoven "The immortal god of harmony (18th century term for counterpoint, although both meanings of the word then and now are applicable), His (last name) should be Ocean, not Bach (Brook). Those who haven't heard him, haven't heard very much. J F Daube, born in 1730, heard J S Bach in 1740's lived until 1797 when he died in Vienna, He was a composer and a music theorist.

Thank you!

I always loved this work in spite of some critics who found it inhomogeneous. Is the Magnificat of JSB the Father homogeneous? There are a lot of feelings in the Magnificat which have to be expressed by contrasting sections. Monteverdi knew it already. For sure, the Magnificat of the father is an absolute masterwork which cannot be equalled by the son. But there are very moving moments in that Magnificat. I love the idea to use approximately the same music for the first and last section (before the final fugue)..

This Magnificat deserves to be known by all music lovers.

The interpretation is excellent. It is very intense and takes advantage of all the details of the score.

TradOrganist

I agree, the opening is absolutely heaven. The Gloria Patri even more!

I honoustly believe the audience should stand while applauding to these great performers. They deserve this.

José Lopes

Although differences between Carl and Johann Magnificat the two compositions are outstanding compositions of religious music. Thanks for these magnific interpretations.

Peter Guindo

Excellent performant, God gave us this wonderful master piece.

No, Carl Philipp did

Gérard Begni

The Magnificat of CPE Bach is undoubtedly his masterwork in religious music. We heve here a very good rendering.
