Vaughan Williams was born on 12th October 1872 in Down Ampney, a village in the Cotswolds. After attending Charterhouse School and Trinity College, Cambridge, he became a student at the Royal College of Music; he later studied with Max Bruch in Berlin and Maurice Ravel in Paris.
He served as a lieutenant in World War I, having volunteered for the Field Ambulance Service; the appalling carnage affected him deeply, as did the deaths of close friends such as George Butterworth.
He wrote nine symphonies between 1910 and 1958, as well as numerous other works including chamber music, opera, choral music, and film scores. He was also one of the first serious collectors of English folk music and served as president of the English Folk Dance and Song Society (EFDSS). The Society's Vaughan Williams Memorial Library is named for him.
Vaughan Williams died on 26th August 1958, and his ashes are interred in Westminster Abbey.

Une superbe et humble composition de Ralph Vaughan Williams. Ces "folks songs of four seasons" portent bien la signature du maître. On y retrouve assurément l' élément fondateur de sa musique, l' inspiration originale des airs traditionnels populaires, tel qu' un "ethomusicologue" peut le faire, ( ainsi que Zoltan Kodaly le vivait), mis en partition de façon élégante et savante, so British; Il y a dans la musique de RVW, une conscience de l' humanité, de la juste place et le respect de chacun, qui effectivement ainsi pensé, agencé organisé, donne des chefs-d' oeuvres qui passeront le temps, peut être même plus que ceux de son ami, notre cher Maurice Ravel. L' interprétation présente semble parfois tellement humble, qu' elle me plait quant à ce qu' elle véhicule d' authenticité, ainsi que l' on peut chanter en famille, à l' école, entre amis; Je pense, pour ce qui concerne surtout ses chansons d' origine populaire, que cela aurait convenu, plu à RVW. Nous sommes ici bien loin des symphonies, mais pourtant l' oeuvre à été écrite en 1949 ! Oui notre compositeur humaniste avait bel et bien un regard de bienveillance envers les ensembles vocaux simples, voir amateurs, et la partition étant dédié à un coeur de femme ( ce qui permet aux enfants de la chanter en coeur), RVW rejoint ainsi le groupe rare des hommes qui composent, non pas pour eux mais pour autrui, afin que la musique puisse leur permettre d' ouvrir la porte de leur propre bonheur, ce bonheur unique à chacun. Musicalement, RVW n' illustre que très peu ici, de façon impressionniste et imagée, il ne raconte poins une histoire ni un ressenti, il dresse un éventail du sensible à travers lequel chacun peur grandir, en chantant, accompagnant; Il y a communion. C' est cela un ouvrage de maître.
