La Mia Vecchiaia
Mina Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Quando io vivrò
La mia vecchiaia abbandonata a me,
Mi scalderò
Pensando a te
Nel mio tramonto.
Ti ritroverò
Magari ubriaco e perso in una via
E chiederò
Agli occhi miei l'ultima lacrima.
Poi, la voce mia
In un inverno freddo sentirai,
Ti chiederà
Perché non sei tornato più.
E barcollerai,
Dicendo che tu non hai chiesto mai
Di voler vivere.
Vecchio pazzo mio,
Se sarai solo almeno come me
Ti aiuterai pensando a noi
Per non crollare.
Se memoria avrai
Dai tempi lieti non ti staccherai
E ti berrai un bicchiere in più
Alla salute mia.
Poi, ritornerai,
La solitudine ti spingerà
E il tuo bastone impazzirà
Fra i piedi tuoi.
Sì ci sarò io

A dirti vecchio non fermarti lì
Vieni a morire qui.

Overall Meaning

The song "La Mia Vecchiaia" by Mina is about the singer reflecting on her old age and how she will spend it thinking about someone she loves. She imagines herself sitting alone, but warming herself with memories of this person as she watches the sunset of her life. In this moment, she imagines she might see this person again, perhaps stumbling down a street drunk or lost, and she would ask her eyes to shed one last tear for him. She then imagines her voice asking this person why he never returned, and perhaps he would sway and admit he never wanted to live.

Mina then paints a picture of the two of them growing old together, as equals in their madness, and helping each other not to fall apart. She imagines that in their old age, they will still have happy memories that will bind them together, and they will drink to her health. Yet she knows that eventually, he too will be alone with his thoughts, leaning on his cane as he tries to remember the good times. In this moment, Mina tells him that he can come and die with her if he wants, and she will be there to comfort him.

Quando io vivrò
When I am alive

La mia vecchiaia abbandonata a me,
My old age abandoned to myself,

Mi scalderò
I will warm myself

Pensando a te
Thinking of you

Nel mio tramonto.
In my sunset.

Ti ritroverò
I'll find you

Magari ubriaco e perso in una via
Maybe drunk and lost on a street

E chiederò
And I'll ask

Agli occhi miei l'ultima lacrima.
My eyes for the ultimate tear.

Poi, la voce mia
Then, my voice

In un inverno freddo sentirai,
You will hear in a cold winter

Ti chiederà
It will ask you

Perché non sei tornato più.
Why haven't you returned?

E barcollerai,
And you'll stagger

Dicendo che tu non hai chiesto mai
Saying that you never asked

Di voler vivere.
To want to live.

Vecchio pazzo mio,
My old crazy man,

Se sarai solo almeno come me
If you will be alone at least like me,

Ti aiuterai pensando a noi
You will help yourself thinking of us

Per non crollare.
To not collapse.

Se memoria avrai
If you will have memory

Dai tempi lieti non ti staccherai
From happy times, you will not detach

E ti berrai un bicchiere in più
And you'll drink one more glass

Alla salute mia.
To my health.

Poi, ritornerai,
Then, you will return,

La solitudine ti spingerà
Loneliness will push you

E il tuo bastone impazzirà
And your cane will go wild

Fra i piedi tuoi.
Among your feet.

Sì ci sarò io
Yes, I will be there,

A dirti vecchio non fermarti lì
To tell you old man, don't stop there

Vieni a morire qui.
Come and die here.
