He spent a long part of his childhood in the café which his parents owned, where he learned work jargon and slang. At the age of 14 he signed up to the conservatoire de musique de Toulouse and to a dramatic arts institute. In the mean time, he set up his first band of 4 musicians in his own name, with whom he played at events throughout the region. In 1957, he was snapped up by Eddie Barclay who signed him on. It was in the studio of Barclay where he met his future wife, Simone Mazaltarim.
In 1958 Perret carried on touring round Parisian cabaret bars and crossed France and Africa as a part of the American group, The Platters. In Novemeber that year, a pleurisy forced him to take two years off in a sanatorium.
A master of the subtleties of the French language and French slang (he even rewrote some of Jean de La Fontaine's fables), his songs are often cheeky (for example Le zizi (The willy)) , asking questions in a seemingly naive child's tone, but has written more serious political songs, such as La bête est revenue, La petite kurde, Vert de Colère ou Lily.

Aie aie aie
Refais-moi ça, c'est bon c'est bon c'est bon
Encore une fois, c'est bon c'est bon c'est bon.
The lyrics to Pierre Perret's song "C'est bon c'est bon" tell the story of a man who goes to the dentist and has a painful experience while in the dentist's chair. The man is so grateful to the dentist for his work even though it causes him pain that he gives him ten bags of something (it is not specified what is in the bags). The man then goes home, but he is still in pain and is unable to stand properly. On the subway, a woman mistakes his pain for something else and ends up causing him even more pain. Despite this, the man becomes infatuated with the woman and cannot stop thinking about her. She is all he can think about, and he cannot resist her.
There are several themes in this song that are noteworthy. One is the idea that pain can be a type of pleasure or that pleasure can come from unexpected sources. Another theme that is explored in the song is the idea of attraction and infatuation. The singer of the song is unable to resist the woman, even though she causes him pain. Additionally, the song touches on the idea of social class and inequality, with the working-class protagonist being attracted to a woman associated with the upper class. Overall, the song is a poignant commentary on the human experience and the complex emotions that people feel.
