The song "El Piojo y La Pulga" by Pedro Infante is a playful, lighthearted tune about a wedding between two unlikely characters: a lice (piojo) and a flea (pulga). However, the wedding cannot take place due to the couple's lack of maize (corn), which they need to survive. But then, a weevil (gorgojo) from his maize field offers to provide the maize needed for the wedding to take place, thus saving the day. Throughout the song, different animals, such as a mouse and a cat, get involved in the wedding and offer to help, whether it be to provide sponsorship or to act as godparents. In the end, there is a fun and festive atmosphere, with wine flowing and even a bit of chaos as the cat gets loose and eats one of the godparents.
The lyrics to this song are quite simple but they convey a humorous and charming story. The imagery of tiny insects and animals coming together to make a wedding happen is whimsical and amusing, while the refrain "tiro lo tiro, tiro liro liro, tiro lo tiro, tiro liro lan" adds to the upbeat and playful tone of the song. While "El Piojo y La Pulga" may not have any deep hidden meanings or messages, it is a fun and beloved classic in the Latin American music canon.
