Pos Cui Cui Ri
Pedro Infante Lyrics

En una canasta vieja,
Te regreso el corazón,
Porque no valía la pena,
Ni siquiera comprar un cajón.

Con tus cosas y el retrato,
Hice una gran quemazón,
Solo me quedo pa' rato,
Tu dichito sin sal y sangrón

Pos cui-cui-ri, pos cui-cui-ri,
Me tenías hasta el copete con tu cui-cui-ri
Pos cui-cui-ri, pos cui-cui-ri,
Para todo y hasta que se me pegó.

Ahora si me prefieres,
Pos cui-cui-ri,
Y de celos te mueres,
Pos cui-cui-ri,
Si de veras me quieres,
Pos cui-cui-ri, pos cui-cui-ri y aquí todo acabo

Hoy te miro cara a cara,
Pa' tirarte el corazón,
Como alguna cosa rara,
Que una vez encendió mi pasión.

Tiene risa quien lloraba,
Llora, llora quien se rió,
Si dijera que cambiaba,
Con el dicho antes murió ahora yo.

Pos cui-cui-ri, pos cui-cui-ri,
Me tenías hasta el copete con tu cui-cui-ri

Pos cui-cui-ri, pos cui-cui-ri,
Para todo y hasta que se me pegó.
Ahora si me prefieres,
Pos cui-cui-ri,
Y de celos te mueres,
Pos cui-cui-ri,

Si de veras me quieres,
Pos cui-cui-ri, pos cui-cui-ri y aquí todo acabo.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Pedro Infante's song Pos Cui Cui Ri depict a man who has finally decided to let go of a toxic relationship. He returns the heart of his lover in an old basket, because he feels it's not worth buying a coffin for it. He burns her belongings and portrait in a bonfire, but keeps her nagging and grumpy attitude as a final reminder of their time together. The chorus is a repetition of "pos cui-cui-ri", which is a phrase used as an expression of annoyance or exasperation in Mexican slang.

The second stanza shows a shift in the power dynamic between the two characters. The man now has the upper hand and taunts his former lover by saying that she's the one who's jealous and desperate now. He offers her the chance to reconcile, but only to deliver the final blow: "and here everything ends". Finally, he confronts her face to face and throws her heart back at her like a strange object that once ignited his passion. The last few lines are a play on words, suggesting that whoever was laughing is now crying, and whoever said they would change has now died.

En una canasta vieja,
In an old basket,

Te regreso el corazón,
I'm returning your heart,

Porque no valía la pena,
Because it wasn't worth it,

Ni siquiera comprar un cajón.
Not even worth buying a coffin.

Con tus cosas y el retrato,
With your things and your picture,

Hice una gran quemazón,
I made a big bonfire,

Solo me quedo pa' rato,
Only your annoying chatter remains,

Tu dichito sin sal y sangrón
Your irritating and whiny little voice.

Pos cui-cui-ri, pos cui-cui-ri,
Pos cui-cui-ri, pos cui-cui-ri,

Me tenías hasta el copete con tu cui-cui-ri
I was sick and tired of your endless cui-cui-ri.

Ahora si me prefieres,
Now, if you prefer me,

Pos cui-cui-ri,
Pos cui-cui-ri,

Y de celos te mueres,
And you die of jealousy,

Pos cui-cui-ri,
Pos cui-cui-ri,

Si de veras me quieres,
If you truly love me,

Pos cui-cui-ri, pos cui-cui-ri y aquí todo acabo
Pos cui-cui-ri, pos cui-cui-ri, and here everything ends.

Hoy te miro cara a cara,
Now I look you straight in the eye,

Pa' tirarte el corazón,
To throw your heart away,

Como alguna cosa rara,
Like some strange thing,

Que una vez encendió mi pasión.
That once ignited my passion.

Tiene risa quien lloraba,
Now those who cried are laughing,

Llora, llora quien se rió,
And those who laughed are now crying,

Si dijera que cambiaba,
If I said I would change,

Con el dicho antes murió ahora yo.
I've learned my lesson, and now it's over.

Pos cui-cui-ri, pos cui-cui-ri,
Pos cui-cui-ri, pos cui-cui-ri,

Me tenías hasta el copete con tu cui-cui-ri
I was sick and tired of your endless cui-cui-ri.

Pos cui-cui-ri, pos cui-cui-ri,
Pos cui-cui-ri, pos cui-cui-ri,

Para todo y hasta que se me pegó.
For every little thing until it drove me crazy.

Ahora si me prefieres,
Now, if you prefer me,

Pos cui-cui-ri,
Pos cui-cui-ri,

Y de celos te mueres,
And you die of jealousy,

Pos cui-cui-ri,
Pos cui-cui-ri,

Si de veras me quieres,
If you truly love me,

Pos cui-cui-ri, pos cui-cui-ri y aquí todo acabo.
Pos cui-cui-ri, pos cui-cui-ri, and here everything ends.
