The lyrics to Pedro Infante's "Soldado raso" are about a young man who is leaving to become a soldier. He is joining the ranks of other brave boys who have left behind their beloved mothers and crying girlfriends to fight in the war. The soldier is happy to go to war as he already has a rifle and a pistol, but he also worries about leaving his mother all alone. He prays to the Virgin Mary, particularly the Virgin of Guadalupe, to watch over his mother and his country. The soldier pledges to defend his flag and prove that his race knows how to die anywhere. At the end of the song, he leaves, singing a farewell to his beloved homeland.
